- Ruel's Spotlight Website: XTV from NDS (26OCT99)
XTV from NDS Ltd. (a News Corp. subsidiary) is push technology for interactive television that you will
want to check out. The spotlighted website says, "XTV, or Extended TV, combines the strengths of the
broadcaster with the advantages of ever-cheaper digital storage technology to deliver value to the
consumer, the advertiser and the broadcaster. It combines digital storage on a hard disk in the set-top
box with simple broadcaster controls to extend the TV business models." The website also mentions
XTV "maximizes your use of bandwidth by using off-peak hours to deliver content to the digital storage
in the consumer's home" and "uses the set-top box storage to create the effect of multiple channels at
no additional operating cost." Content is encrypted using NDS VideoGuard to protect the
digital-perfect copies of the content from being pirated. This is innovative push and on-demand
technology that definitely throws conventional television scheduling and time out the window.
Paul Jackson from the UK headquarters of NDS says, "NDS is currently the world's
leading supplier of smart card based conditional access systems for broadcasters. NDS' interactive
service offerings benefit from the addressability, transactional security and local secure storage
provided by its smart cards." As well as having its home base in the UK, NDS also has offices in
Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, California, France, Germany, and Brazil. Check out the other NDS products by
