- LG Electronics announces Internet-enabled Karaoke set-top boxes (21OCT99) (allNetDevices)
Karaoke set-top boxes. They will bring a lot of the non-computer and non-internet people to the internet.
I don't know about your family, but in my family's home, my relatives' homes, my compadres' homes,
my friends' homes (pretty much all filipino and asian homes), there are karaoke machines in each of
those homes. I'm sure it could be the same way in other people's homes.
Now, wasn't I talking about karaoke and set-tops a while back? Ahem.... If you've
been following the Interactive TV Top.Box.News here at Ruel.Net, then you would know that this was
coming down the line. Get a karaoke set-top box and have streaming
karaoke videos come into your home via the internet instead of, or in addition to, playing karaoke
laser disks.
Watch for combination free/subscription/pay-per-play karaoke jukebox services
for set-tops on the internet in addition to all of the other music services. And maybe eventually add a
videocam so other people can watch you karaoke just like going to karaoke night at a restaurant or bar,
but on the internet. BTW, David Haskin, managing editor over at allNetDevices.com, and a regular
visitor to Ruel.Net, wrote the linked article about the LG Electronics karaoke set-top boxes. -ruel

- Television critic does not like TV via the Web and says not ready for prime time (15OCT99) (Union Tribune)
San Diego Union Tribune television critic Robert P. Laurence says, "When it's computing you want, you
can't beat a computer. But as a TV set, the computer is a sorry substitute. At least for now...."
Laurence, who admits that he is "not the hippest of computer users,"
provides a good illustration of everyday non-computer people's frustrations with PCs and having to install
software of some sort. If you are not technically inclined, you may experience similar frustrations with PCs
whether at home or at work. I've seen this frustration when helping computer users with their home PCs
and when I used to perform system analyst duties helping everyday people work with PCs and other
computers in government offices. This frustration occurs everywhere. People just want the box to work.
Fortunately, the solution for everyday non-computer people who want to watch the new interactive
on-demand television media will be the set-top box connected to a television set. -ruel

stands visible in a 12-pack at your dealer's shop.")
The Nokia Mediamaster DVB 9730C is designed for cable television in Sweden and is
compliant with ECCA Eurobox standards.
Chris Duffy in Illinois sent in the link. Chris saw one of my past comments:
"Imagine this possibility: Nokia boxes and Motorola boxes in a head-to-head battle over the
... retail set-top box market with WebTV boxes, AOL-TV boxes, Scientific-Atlanta boxes, and
everyone else." To which Chris says,
"The battle for the market begins huh? Motorola, Broadcom, Microsoft vs. Nokia, Intel, Linux, etc.
This is getting really interesting isn't it?" -ruel
