Safeway supermarket partners with AT&T BIS (formerly TCI) for advertising and marketing over interactive cable (21SEP99) (PRN)
Connecting with existing supermarkets, instead of building new online supermarkets, is the way to go for
cross-marketing of services where the supermarkets advertise on interactive TV and the the interactive TV
service advertises with the supermarket. You have this cross-marketing now on regular television with
supermarket commercials on regular broadcast TV and references to television in supermarket in-store
marketing and print advertising. If you consider conventional advertising by supermarkets and
add interactivity over television, you will probably have the capability to print supermarket coupons from
the TV set-top and eventually the downloading of the coupons into new supermarket store
smartcards. Instead of getting your supermarket coupons from a print newspaper, you could get the
coupons off your television set in the future. Since not everyone is going to have a printer and the
smartcards are not going to be ready for a while, you will have the advertising telling you to come on
down to your neighborhood supermarket to get the advertised specials and discounts. -ruel
