Richard Tomkins On The Brainier TV Box: Will personal television provide better targeted advertising,
will sponsored content make more of a comeback, will product placement become the norm, and what else is new about
people skipping commercials when they already do so by flipping channels (31OCT00) (FinancialTimes)
On flipping channels, there is a TV weatherman named John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, who is
currently on KUSI-TV in San Diego and very often in the tease at the commercial break before his weather segment
he would playfully say "No FIipping" thereby urging TV viewers to not interact with the channel selector on the remote control or
on the TV set. Coleman is said to be the first TV weatherman to report the weather while standing on his head
(or on one hand). You can click here
and scroll down the clicked page to read about John Coleman who says he has done every trick in the book to try to keep
the TV viewer's attention.

Which Came First, WebTV Box Or TV Web Content: Microsoft senior vice president Craig Mundie says WebTV was in
a chicken-and-egg situation (30OCT00) (DallasMorningNews)
The Dallas Morning News quotes Microsoft advanced strategies senior vice president Craig Mundie as stating,
"The first thing we said at Microsoft was, 'Let's put the Internet on the television.' Now we can let the TV companies do some
interactive programming that puts Web sites behind TV shows. But that's turned out to be a chicken-and-egg problem. Until you
get enough of the devices [WebTVs] out there, the entertainment companies aren't willing to invest the money to get some
content out there."
When you consider the "chicken-and-egg" problem and the PC competition in the U.S., the
one-million+ WebTV users number that so many in the online news media frown down upon is looking respectable particularly
when you also consider the IDC numbers projecting only 3.9 million users for interactive TV leader United Kingdom by the end of the
year and the Mediavision numbers for Sweden with a current number of 2 million web television users. Those latter numbers would
consist of many cable TV and satellite TV subscribers while WebTV had to primarily go after dial-up subscribers. -ruel

(01NOV00) (ETSU)
This webpage is from East Tennesse State University and deals with distance learning via television.
There are some practical real-life tips here that are applicable and can be adapted to commercial interactive television.
BTW, a bunch of books and research on "interactive television" that I've looked at in libraries (the brick-and-mortar libraries
with real books) deals with distance learning via TV. And, of course, there is all of the multimedia learning material. -ruel

Related On Game Playing: Cell Phone Inventor Martin Cooper says "Game playing will go international" (01NOV00) (Newsbytes)
Newsbytes quotes ArrayComm CEO and cell phone inventor Martin Cooper as stating,
"Game playing will go international. A kid in Toledo can interact with a kid in Beijing and they can play a game."
Cooper sees a wireless future for the internet. Newbytes quotes Cooper as stating, "For people around the world to
truly adopt the Internet, it must be wireless, broadband, packet-switched, available anywhere and at a low cost."
IMHO, the cost to the consumer for not only the devices but also the services will be the key to widespread adoption.
The costs must be low so the typical consumer can afford to play everyday. -ruel

TechTrends' new report "Digital Cable Set-Top Boxes: North American Deployments in 2000-2001" finds current 92% market share
of Motorola and Scientific-Atlanta set-top boxes in North America will decline to 70% as half of North America's leading cable
operators deploy set-top boxes from consumer electronics manufacturers Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, and Sony
(31OCT00) (TechTrends)
The news announcement quotes TechTrends managing director Todd D. Wiener as stating, "Cable operators understand the
importance of acquiring customers at retail. That's one reason why they prefer to deal with vendors who have strong brand
recognition and retail clout. In the future, traditional set-top box makers like Scientific-Atlanta may have a disadvantage, since
most consumers and retailers are unfamiliar with them."
It would make sense that Scientific-Atlanta would play up its
Explorer name for its set-top boxes in the
retail market. Many cable subscribers are familiar with Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer boxes. And Motorola already has brandname
recognition among consumers with the Motorola line of wireless mobile phones (Motorola also has an
online store where it currently
only sells its phone products). Motorola could sell their set-top boxes at retail by piggybacking onto the Motorola cell phone
retail distribution network. The TechTrends report should be of interest to those folks who have been asking about actual numbers of
set-top boxes deployed or soon to be deployed. -ruel

The news announcement quotes IDC European consumer device research analyst Jason Armitage as stating,
"The most successful service providers have realized the key to recruiting a user base [for successful deployment
of interactive TV services] is to offer compelling programming content. Content has to be sufficiently attractive to
justify charging a monthly fee that will cover the cost of providing subsidized hardware." Also
