Tom Spring doesn't like his free Webplayer net appliance from Virginconnect (09OCT00) (PCWorld)
You can get a "free" Webplayer from Virginconnect. The
Webplayer doesn't support java or streaming media, but it's good for general surfing around the net. You get
free internet access and email with the Webplayer device. It's not that bad for something that's practically free.
If you're looking at the various $300-$400 non-really-PC-like net appliances which you have to pay monthly subscription
fees for, then you might as well also check out the Webplayer which is really a bargain - strike that, it's a steal in comparison.
I haven't had the connection problems that Tom Spring talks about in the news item. -ruel

Kasenna Inc. reportedly to unveil content distribution architecture for delivering broadcast-quality streaming video over
the net with metadata on edge servers (09OCT00) (EETimes)
EE Times quotes Kasenna research and development vice president Satish Menon as stating,
"Many people underestimate the sheer size of video. They do not allow enough bandwidth in the backbone,
and build edge servers without enough storage capacity to handle carrier- and commercial-grade streaming media.
They have no idea how much space broadcast-quality video streams could take up."
