NEW: Installing ATI Multimedia Center Software with ATI TV Wonder (July 2001)

  • What is the new version 7.1 of the ATI Multimedia Center and where to get it?
  • Microsoft DirectX 8.0 (or above) Required For The ATI Multimedia Center Update For ATI TV Wonder
  • Microsoft Download Page: DirectX 8.0 (or above) and Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0 (or above)
  • How do I get WebTV to work with ATI-TV Wonder or ATI TV Wonder VE? (short answer: Get the latest version 7.1 of ATI Multimedia Center)

So, if you want to try out the new ATI Multimedia Center with the new drivers, you will have to:
    1. First install DirectX 8.0 (or above).
    2. Second install Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0 (or above).
    3. Third install the new ATI Multimedia Center.
    4. On subsequent reboots of the PC, be sure to specify that the drivers are in the C:\TVWonderWDMDrivers directory (you will have to do this several times during several reboots).
    5. Then you'll have to install the actual ATI Multimedia Center software by running C:\ATI\SUPPORT\MMC_7_1_TVWONDER\MMC\SETUP.EXE
    6. After installation you may have to go into setup and into video to set the color, brightness, contrast, and tint to get the picture - the pointers may be all the way to the left causing a black "non-picture" - put all the pointers in the middle by clicking reset to get the picture.
    7. If you then want to install WebTV For Windows, then do Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup and then scroll down to click WebTV For Windows.

ATI TV WONDER SOFTWARE ON ORIGINAL CD (October 1999): [The below note is a little bit out of date with the release of the above-linked new version of ATI Multimedia Center, but the end result is still the same for me since the original default CD installation software (version 2.0) still provides a better picture although the new software provides a few new features like TV in a browser and MPEG2 recording.]

The default software installation for the ATI TV Wonder card is easy and works just fine. But for those folks asking about getting WebTV For Windows to work with the ATI TV Wonder card, then look for a ReadMe.wri instruction document dated October 19, 1999, on the installation CD at D:\INSTALL\MMC\PM\PmCore\main\ReadMe.wri (where D: is your CD drive letter) and which may be sitting on the harddrive in the C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main directory. You will have to open the file with WordPad. WARNING: Installation of the alternative drivers to get the ATI TV Wonder card to work with WebTV For Windows is apparently no longer officially supported by ATI for the ATI TV Wonder card. The ATI folks took down their online information for these particular instructions at the ATI website. If you want the instructions, look on installation disk. If you attempt this tricky installation, don't ask for any help for the installation or the un-installation because you are on your own. At one time I did get the installation to work but got degraded picture quality using the alternative drivers and I lost the video capture and still-screen capture. So I switched back to the default ATI TV Wonder software (I could still use the WebTV For Windows program but without a built-in integrated TV picture). -ruel
